It was a year ago this month that I developed a theme that would work with WordPress to publish daily comic and news content: ComicPress. I really just needed it for myself, WordPress had the features I wanted and I already ran multiple installs of it for multiple sites so it was easy to just maintain updates and mods on the one bit of software.
There were fellow comic creators I talked with looking to do something similar so I made a generic version of the theme, called it ComicPress (a play on WordPress) and released it to the public figuring it would give some people a start in customizing their own. Since then though, it started to really take off, being recommended on comic forums and blogs throughout the web, even appearing on the creator of WordPress’ blog. Apparently there are now 100’s of comic creators using modified versions of the theme to run their comics.
I guess that means I should write some documentation.
I’ve wanted to do that for a while now, step-by-steps on customizing the theme, tweaking PHP and CSS to meet your individual needs (as the original version just met mine). It’s a big project though, so I thought handling it in small chunks on this blog would make it an easier task. Also, the idea of ComicPress was to get multiple people doing the same thing, so they could come up with their own customization ideas and share them with others. That’s been happening a lot in the forum but I’d like to see it happening here too, so if you would like to contribute to this blog, then please stop by the forum and let me know!
The forum has become a wealth of knowledge in customizing and ironing out problems but transferring a lot of that stuff here should get it more organized and save on repeating info a lot.
If there are any tutorials you would like to see right away, then feel free to mention them in the comments below.
